Granny Square Mario

8 bit Mario
My boys LOVE Mario Brothers, so naturally I thought I would create them a Mario blanket after seeing a pattern for one on Pinterest (evil, EVIL Pinterest!). The entire blanket is made up of granny squares piece together to make an eight bit Mario paying respects to the original Nintendo version. For the die hard Mario fans, I know it is not the exact same coloring as the original NES version, but I prefer this color variation better. It's my craft, I'll do it how I like it. :)

While granny squares are easy enough, do not think you could easily whip this up over a weekend. This project is a BEAST! It is very time consuming. So many granny squares!

To give credit where credit is due, I got the pattern from My Idle Little Hands. It took her over a year to complete the project. It took me about six months to make the Mario portion of the blanket. As you can see, I am missing the remaining outside blocks to complete the blanket. I haven't decided what color to use to make those blocks, so in the mean time my boys use it in their playroom. On a positive note, it gives me a good excuse to go yarn shopping to find that right color.

In case you don't know how to make granny squares (it's very easy), watch the very thorough video below. I love her accent (dontcha know!), so I sometimes play the video to just listen to her talk.

Happy hookin' and stitchin'!
